Whites, Colors & Darks โ€” Sort it Right

Mixing colors is the #1 cause of ruined laundry. A 30-second sort saves you from pink underwear and gray whites.

The Three Basic Piles

  • Whites: White t-shirts, socks, underwear, towels, sheets. Wash in warm or hot water with bleach if needed.
  • Lights: Pastels, light blues, light grays, beige. Use warm water, no bleach.
  • Darks: Black, navy, dark red, dark green, denim. Wash in cold water to lock color in.

Special Piles to Pull Out

  • Towels & sheets: Wash separately โ€” heavy fabric and lint shed all over lighter clothes.
  • Delicates: Lace, lingerie, silk, wool โ€” use a mesh bag and gentle cycle.
  • Activewear: Sweaty gym clothes deserve their own load with sport detergent.
  • Brand-new dark items: First 2โ€“3 washes alone โ€” they bleed dye heavily.

Pre-Wash Checklist

  • Empty every pocket โ€” tissues turn into lint storm, pens explode.
  • Zip up zippers, fasten Velcro โ€” they snag everything.
  • Turn dark jeans and printed tees inside out.
  • Pre-treat any visible stains before washing.
โš ๏ธ Color bleed test: If you're unsure about a new item, dab it with a wet white cloth. If color transfers, wash it alone the first few times.

Detergent 101 โ€” Pick the Right One

Using the wrong detergent (or too much) is the most common laundry mistake.

Always Buy HE

  • HE (High Efficiency) works in all modern machines including ours. Look for the "HE" symbol.
  • Regular (non-HE) detergent creates too many suds and damages HE machines.

Form & Specialty

  • Liquid: Best all-around โ€” works in cold water, handles grease.
  • Pods: Drop into the empty drum first, not the dispenser.
  • Free & Clear: For sensitive skin or babies.
  • Down/wool wash: Required for down jackets โ€” regular detergent strips the natural oils.

Use Less Than You Think

  • Most people use 2โ€“3ร— too much. Excess leaves residue and a musty smell.
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cap is usually enough for a normal load.
โš ๏ธ Never mix bleach with ammonia or softener โ€” harmful fumes.

Washer Capacity & Weight Limits

Picking the right machine size saves time and money, and gives clothes the agitation they need to come out truly clean.

Quick Sizing Guide

  • 20 lb: ~1 week of clothes for one person, or 2โ€“3 days for a couple.
  • 30 lb: Couple's weekly load, or single twin/full sheet set with pillowcases.
  • 40 lb: Family of 4 weekly load, or queen sheet set + 2 pillows.
  • 60 lb: Family of 5+, or queen comforter + sheets together.
  • 80 lb: King comforter, multiple sleeping bags, or 2 weeks of family laundry at once.

How Full is Too Full?

  • Fill the drum to about 3/4 full when dry โ€” clothes need room to tumble.
  • Overloaded = poor cleaning + extra strain on the motor + soap residue stuck in fabric.
  • Underloaded = wasted water and money.

When to Size Up

  • Comforters, blankets, sleeping bags need a 40 lb or larger machine โ€” small ones can't agitate them properly.
  • Wet items weigh ~3ร— more than dry โ€” keep that in mind when transferring to dryer.
  • If unsure, ask our staff โ€” we're happy to recommend the right machine for your load.

Quick Stain Removal

Treat stains before washing โ€” heat from the dryer can set them permanently.

Stain Try This First
Blood Cold water + soap (never hot)
Grease / Oil Dish soap, blot gently
Red Wine Salt or club soda right away
Coffee / Tea Cold water + a splash of vinegar
Ink Rubbing alcohol on a cloth
Sweat White vinegar pre-soak

Dryer Settings & Smart Drying

The right heat setting protects fabric, saves time, and cuts energy use. Most people just hit "high" โ€” that's a mistake.

Heat Settings by Fabric

  • High heat (โ‰ˆ150ยฐF / 65ยฐC): Cottons, towels, jeans, sturdy bedding.
  • Medium heat (โ‰ˆ135ยฐF / 57ยฐC): Synthetics, polyester blends, casual t-shirts.
  • Low heat (โ‰ˆ125ยฐF / 52ยฐC): Activewear, lingerie, items with elastic, prints.
  • Air dry / no heat: Wool, silk, anything labeled "lay flat to dry."

Habits That Save Money & Clothes

  • Clean the lint trap before every load โ€” clogged trap = 30% longer dry time + fire risk.
  • Don't over-dry. Clothes that come out hot are over-baked โ€” they shrink and wear out fast.
  • Pull out wrinkle-prone items while still slightly damp and hang โ€” skip the iron entirely.
  • Add a clean, dry towel to a wet load โ€” it absorbs moisture and cuts drying time by 25%.
  • Don't dry items with oil/grease stains โ€” heat sets them permanently.

What NOT to Put in the Dryer

  • Wool sweaters: They will shrink. Lay flat instead.
  • Bras with underwire: Wire warps and pokes through.
  • Anything labeled "tumble dry โ€” no heat" seriously, follow the label.
  • Latex/rubber-backed rugs: Backing crumbles and clogs the lint trap.

Drying Down Jackets & Comforters โ€” The Wool Ball Method

Down items (jackets, comforters, sleeping bags) are the trickiest things to dry. Done wrong, your $200 puffer comes out flat, clumpy, and useless. Done right, it stays fluffy and warm for years. The secret weapon? Wool dryer balls.

Why Wool Balls Are Essential for Down

Down feathers naturally clump together when wet โ€” and once dried that way, they stay clumped forever, leaving cold spots in your jacket or comforter. 100% wool dryer balls bounce around the drum and do four important jobs at once:

  • Break up clumps: They physically beat wet down clusters apart, preventing permanent clumping.
  • Restore loft: Agitation re-fluffs feathers back to their original 3-D structure (loft = warmth).
  • Cut drying time ~25%: Separated down lets hot air penetrate faster, so the dryer doesn't need to run as long.
  • Reduce static & soften naturally: Wool friction smooths fibers without chemical softeners.

Step-by-Step: How to Dry a Down Jacket or Comforter

  1. Wash first with proper down soap. Regular detergent strips the natural oils that make down water-resistant. Use a dedicated down/technical wash on a gentle cycle, cold water.
  2. Spin out extra water. Run an extra spin cycle if your washer allows โ€” the less water, the shorter the drying time.
  3. Set the dryer to LOW heat. High heat damages the natural oils and brittle feather quills. Never use high heat on down.
  4. Add 3โ€“6 wool dryer balls. Use 3 for a jacket, 4โ€“5 for a queen comforter, 6 for a king-size comforter. More items = more balls.
  5. Pause every 20โ€“30 minutes. Take the item out, shake it vigorously, and break up any clumps you feel with your hands. This is the single most important step.
  6. Be patient โ€” it takes 2โ€“4 hours. A queen comforter needs 3โ€“4 hours total. Stopping early = damp down = mildew smell within days.
  7. Confirm it's bone dry. Squeeze around the seams and corners โ€” if you feel any cold or dampness, run another 30 minutes.
โš ๏ธ Critical: Down that's even slightly damp will mildew within 24โ€“48 hours, and that smell never fully comes out. When in doubt, dry longer.

Why NOT Tennis Balls or Dryer Sheets

  • Tennis balls: A common internet hack โ€” but they shed yellow-green dye, can melt at high heat, and make a deafening noise. Stick with wool.
  • Dryer sheets: Leave a waxy coating on feathers that destroys loft permanently. Same with liquid fabric softener.
  • Plastic dryer balls: Don't have the same softening or absorbing effect โ€” wool is genuinely better.

Bonus Uses for Wool Dryer Balls

  • Add 3โ€“4 drops of essential oil to balls for natural scent (no chemical fabric softener needed).
  • Use them on every load โ€” they shave 15โ€“25% off normal drying time.
  • One set lasts 1,000+ loads. Throw them in a mesh bag when not in use to keep them clean.
